UCLA Students Receiving Academic Accommodations for Note Taking Are Offered Otter Voice Meeting Notes
Los Altos, CA - February 6, 2020 - Otter.ai announced today that UCLA offers Otter Voice Meeting Notes, an AI-powered live transcription and collaboration app for students who are receiving academic accommodations for note-taking. Otter Voice Meeting Notes enables users to capture, search, and share meeting notes in real-time.
Peer note-taking in education has long been plagued with challenges as students were dependent on others for the quality, consistency, and timeliness of their notes. UCLA’s quarter system also made it especially tough on administrators to quickly find and screen qualified note-takers to meet student demand.
“UCLA recognized we needed to offer our students with learning disabilities more control over their academic accommodations. We looked beyond peer note takers for a highly accurate, reliable, and easy-to-use app and found Otter.ai,” said Dr. Nickey Woods, Director of the Center for Accessibility at UCLA. “Otter Voice Meeting Notes empowers our students with automated live transcription, removes their dependency on others, and enables them to access the learning environment in a way that’s most efficient for them. By enabling students to actively engage in lectures and study groups vs focusing on note-taking, we believe Otter is an important and valuable tool for education.”
Otter was also used at UCLA during former First Lady Michelle Obama’s visit to Pauley Pavilion for College Signing Day so deaf students could fully participate and engage with the spoken word in real time while viewing a live transcription.
“UCLA is an innovator in accessibility services and is offering its students the same advanced AI note taker used by large technology, financial and media companies. Not only is UCLA on the leading edge of EdTech by offering its students the latest AI apps like Otter Voice Meeting Notes, but it is also sharing best practices with other universities to ensure that students with learning disabilities across the country have access to the latest assistive tools,” said Sam Liang, CEO and cofounder of Otter.ai.
New features in Otter have made the product more relevant for students and note-takers in education. For example, using the custom vocabulary feature, students can add proper names, academic terms, and specific acronyms to their account and these will be automatically recognized by Otter.
Otter Voice Meeting Notes is an AI-powered platform that transcribes voice to text in real time and generates rich notes for meetings, in-person, remote, live or pre-recorded conversations or presentations. By capturing spoken words accurately and making valuable information easily searchable and shareable,Otter helps students stay focused, save time, and collaborate in classrooms, study groups or while learning remotely. Otter can be used for select online classes or entire virtual learning programs as high schools and universities take all classes online.
